Enough is Enough?
Reading: Acts 4:13-22
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely
I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:19,20)
We are facing difficult times. Evangelism is facing opposition on all fronts. Many have stopped doing ministry believing they cannot do anything anymore. So, when do we stop ministry? I don’t think we are facing darker days than that of the apostles or early martyrs. Times had been worse. We should not be cheated into believing that our ministry has come to an end. Jesus promised to be with us to the very end of the age as we go proclaiming the Good News. That means we must be at it to the very end of the age, come what may.
Saul Paul did not have any consideration for women but dragged them and put them in prison (Acts 8:3), and voted for their death (26:10). Priscilla had to leave her home by virtue of being a Jew (Acts 18:2). Having driven out from one pagan city to another, she did not tell her husband, “Let us keep our mouths shut, or else we will be driven out from here too.” When Paul went to Syria she and her husband went with him (Acts 18:18-26). They laboured among the Gentiles risking their own lives and raised churches among the Gentiles (Rom 16:3).
When a door is closed we must knock at it (Mt 7:7). Mr. George Verwer, Founder of Operation Mobilisation, says that even a cat knows how to open a closed door. Just push! The house-owner may open the door, invite you in and listen to the Good News. A village may open up, or even a city. The Samaritan woman went and knocked and the village enmasse opened up.
It is under such difficult circumstances that God will perform miracles like the lame walking and prison door opening. If one door is locked, go to another door. Some door is sure to open, and Jesus is the Lord who opens and no one can shut. If God be for us, who can be against us?
“Is there a right to convert? Can it be banned? The short answer is that there is no right to convert, but there is a right to be converted. Hence there cannot be legislation banning conversion.” (Mani Shankar Iyer in his article, Acts of Conversion — The Week, 4 Jan 2015)
