Step into my shoes!

Reading: Ephesians 5:25-33

“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,

for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” (Mt 7:12)

Kumar dies and goes to God. God tells him that he treated his wife very badly and that he should go back to earth to do penance. He would be a woman for some years and then if he was fit he would be accepted by God. So he comes back to earth as Kumari. He is born in a humble family.

A man comes to see her to marry her. He sees her and goes back. His father writes, “We like your daughter, but she is too dark. We wanted a fair girl. But if you can give us ten lakh rupees, 100 sovereigns of gold and a new car, we will consider.” Kumari is humiliated, but remembers this is what he did to his wife. Even though they knew, it was beyond the means of the girl’s family, they demanded it, making them go into debts.

So Kumari is married. She was forced to go home for delivery, even though hospital facilities were better in her husband’s place. The first child was a girl. Her parents had not cleared even the debts they incurred for her marriage. Now, how would they manage a gold chain? Kumar was smitten at the remembrance of his wife shedding tears. Kumari’s parents made a chain from her mother’s wedding chain and sent her.

Her mother-in-law’s welcome words were, “What are you worth if you give birth to a girl baby?” Kumar remembered how he kept his mouth shut when his mother spitefully spit those words out.

Kumari was shocked to discover that her husband had developed a relationship with a woman in her absence. She fell at his feet and begged him to leave the other woman. He just laughed. “All men have affairs, you must learn to accept it,” is all he said. Kumari wept her heart out. She felt cheated, betrayed. There were no words to describe her emotions. How could he laugh? Kumar remembered that’s exactly what he did when his wife wept at his feet.

He wept and he wept and he wept till his wife woke him up and asked him what the matter was. He didn’t say anything, but he was a changed man. He had understood that his wife was a person to be loved, cherished, protected and respected.
