Let a woman learn!
Reading: 2 Timothy 3:1-9
“A woman should learn” (1 Tim 2:11)
Paul writing to Timothy who was pastoring the Ephesian Church wrote that a woman should learn in quietness and full submission (1 Tim 2:11). The reason he gives is that it was the woman who was deceived (v14).
I was an ardent follower of the Seventh Day doctrine in observing the Saturday as the Sabbath. After our marriage, my husband made me sit and taught me the Book of Galatians. The very moment I snapped out of a false doctrine. It was like coming out of darkness into daylight. I had read the book of Galatians so many times but had not understood it until then.
The Pharisees were thorough with the law. At one point Jesus told them, “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mt 9:13). What does this show? It is not enough to be reading the Scriptures. We must learn and understand what it means. Sadly this is what happened to many women in Timothy’s church. They kept on learning; they attended Bible studies and may be wrote Scripture examinations also. But unfortunately they never took the pains to understand the truths they were reading and learning. More importantly they failed to apply it to their lives, which is true learning. The result? — They became targets of deception that opened the door to various kinds of sins (2 Tim 3:6,7).
Jesus said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me” (Mt 11:29). Yoke is discipline. If we discipline ourselves to sit with the Bible and meditate and refer to Study Bibles and understand the truth, we will never be deceived. When we read the Bible the seed is sown in our hearts. The responsibility of making it good soil is in our hands. If we rush through a passage and leave for work, we let people trample upon the Word and satan picks it away. We thus make our heart wayside. When we put what we read to practice, trials are sure to come as much as the sun is sure to rise. If we allow persecution to scorch us, then we have not dug up the fallow, rocky ground to receive the Word. If we let worries of the world and the deceitfulness of riches strangle us, we have not laboured to remove these and make our heart good for the seed.
But if we understand what we read, persevere and bring forth good fruit, we have prepared our hearts. We have learned!
