Choose your Doctor!
Reading: James 5:13-16
“Luke, the beloved physician” (Col 4:14)
Luke became a loveable doctor to Paul, not just because of the treatment he received but for his trustworthiness and honesty. They say medical science has advanced so much that it is difficult to see a normal person. We all are in need of a doctor some time or other. How will you choose your doctor?
“Whenever there is a choice between two doctors with similar years of experience and qualification, opt for the doctor who is willing to talk and explain things.” You have a right to know what’s happening to you. You must be able to discuss your malady, the line of treatment, the safety of the drugs used, etc. But don’t google and then cross-question your doctor.
“A rational ethical doctor does not create fear or panic, but gives timely and balanced information. While the security of the problem should not be underplayed, the patient should not be driven to panic and rushed into making a major decision like undergoing an operation (except of course in the case of genuine emergencies).” You can have a second opinion but do not go from doctor to doctor swallowing all the drugs each one prescribes. Most medicines have side-effects and must be carefully and minimally used. Injection must be taken only when necessary. Don’t insist on an injection. An understanding doctor will not mind your taking second opinion.
“A rational ethical doctor does not pretend to know everything; the doctor can admit that there are aspects of the illness that he or she cannot definitely comment upon.” Doctors are not gods. They can only do their best. A good doctor will not hesitate to refer you to another doctor who may be an expert in that field.
“A rational, ethical doctor does not advise additional investigations and procedures due to demands from the patient. He will guide the patient towards ethical management of the illness. Even though many laboratories give hefty commissions to doctors who refer patients to them, a rational physician would not recommend a test or procedure, just because the patient asks for it. We need a doctor who would choose the healthiest options in life, acting as a friend and guide, not just a detached expert.”
Don’t be upset if your doctor tells you, you don’t need any treatment. He is an honest doctor. May be what he says is true!
