Single and Sinless
Reading: 1 Timothy 5:11-15
“She never left the temple but worshiped God night and day, fasting and praying” (Lk 2:37b)
Paul admonished Timothy not to put young widows in the list of widows who had pledged to serve the Lord and be dedicated to Him. Because normally their sexual passions overcome them and they decide to marry and break the commitment. Then they bring judgment on themselves, not because they decided to marry but because they broke their commitment, became idle, went from house to house gossiping and fell in sin (1 Tim 5:11-15). So it was better for them to get married and have a home and family of their own. Then no one would be able to criticize them. So it is better for young widows not to enthusiastically say that they would remain unmarried and serve the Lord. Yet Anna was accepted against the rule.
See how many hurdles Anna had to overcome. She gave word to remain single and serve the Lord and was faithful to the end. She was a young widow of may be 23-25 when she joined the band. How many hardships she faced and how many sexual temptations she battled, God alone knows. She overcame all that and remained a widow. She never gave place to gossip because she was never idle. She occupied herself in fasting, praying and worshiping. She never went house-visiting to while away her time in gossip. “She never left the temple.”
As she progressed in her spiritual life, she was anointed by the Holy Spirit and received the gift of prophecy too. That’s how she came there at the right time and instantly knew that the baby was the Messiah and gave thanks to God. She started spreading the Good News to all who were waiting expectantly for the deliverance of Jerusalem.
You may be a spinster, separated, widowed or living apart. If you have decided to live without your husband, you must take utmost care to keep yourself unspotted. Anna proves that it is possible at any age to overcome temptations and lead a life above criticism. If possible live with your parents or children or consider remarriage.
Anna being a prophetess was speaking to young women for edification, exhortation and comfort and counselling them. Keep yourself busy to escape sin.
