Shalini was a sweet girl of ten. She was petted and pampered by her rich parents. They decked her shelves with fashionable dresses which were hardly used. Shalini would throw them aside saying she didn’t like them.
One day while she was watching the TV she was shocked to find people and children wading through neckdeep water to save their lives. When they were rescued, they shivered in cold. They were taken to a Relief Camp. They had no towel, no change of clothes.
They simply sat there hungry and cold.
Mummy explained to her: “Chennai is flooded. Thousands are rendered homeless. They lost all their possessions.” Shalini felt a pang of pain in her chest. She remembered what the pastor said a few weeks ago: “What you do to the needy and suffering is doing for Jesus.” She could not sleep that night. Those scenes ran in her mind again and again. Children crying for milk, people in camp!
The next day in school the Principal announced that a lorry was going to Chennai with relief material. The Principal appealed to them to bring whatever they could, for the suffering. When Shalini came home, she opened her godrej. “Mama, I want to give away these clothes to Chennai people,” she shouted to mama. Mama came in and said: “Yes child, you are allowed to give, but we cannot replace them now.”
Shalini thought for five minutes. Mummy was gone. She took out the clothes and packed them. She kept three sets for her use. The next day she duly handed them over to the teachers. She managed with three sets. Because the dhobi would take a week to bring them back, washed and ironed Shalini washed her dress everyday herself. When she was tired of wearing the same dress, she told herself, “At least I have three. There are those with only one.”
After two months mummy and papa offered to take her to the shop to buy some clothes. Shalini said: “No papa, no mummy. We must give till it hurts. That’s what pastor said. Every time I’m tired of using the same dress, every time I wash, I think of the poor. I feel their pain. I don’t need clothes right now. We have wasted lot of money that could have been given to the suffering. Let’s lead a simple life.” Daddy and mummy hung their heads in shame; for they did not send anything for Flood Relief.
Give to the poor and needy and Jesus will put you on His right side.
