Vani was learning to play the veena that her father had bought her. It became her obsession. Morning and evening when she was back from school and again in the night she would practise.
Alli in the opposite house would sit down to study in the morning and the ‘ting tang’ of the veena melody would come floating in the air. She would close her book and be absorbed in the music. Sometimes Vani used to sing also. Evening Alli would start with her homework when the music would travel through the window and flow into her ears, enthralling her.
With the open book in her hand she would daydream as if she was playing the veena to the thrill of an audience.
When Alli’s father noticed this, he stood in his front yard and shouted, “Oi, do you have any sense? You should discipline your daughter. Day and night if she plays the veena how will children study?” Alli’s mother would play the second fiddle, “As if your daughter is a musician, don’t walk with your noses up.” Vani’s parents came out and gave a pat reply, “We will do whatever we want in our house. Who are you to ask?”
Vani was listening to the verbal war. “What a big fight for a silly matter. How can I pacify?” she thought. Night she ran to the opposite house and hugged Alli. “Alli, when do you study, tell me,” she enquired. “Mmm... morning 6-7, evening 7-9” she replied. “O.K. I’ll do one thing. I will not play the veena during those times. Other times if you hear me playing it, come running and I will teach you to play it,” said Vani. Alli’s eyes opened wide. She clapped her hands and ran to her parents saying, “Hiii, Vani is going to teach me veena.” The eyes of her parents, who were listening to the conversation, became moist.
Love can conquer anything. We should not seek our comfort alone, rather be considerate to others.
