A man had a coconut grove. He wanted to expand it. So he asked the gardener to plant 100 more saplings promising to pay him an extra amount for the extra work. The gardener was happy because he had to get his daughter married and needed the money.
The first day he planted 40 saplings and he thought he could complete the work before the marriage and pocket the extra money. But the next day he could plant only 20. Thereafter he could plant only a few a day, and he was discouraged. The owner came to inspect the work and the worker described his predicament. The owner observed his work and found out the reason.
He told the worker that his crowbar was blunt. “You first sharpen it and you won’t waste so much energy while digging,” he said. But the worker replied, “No sir, I don’t have time for that. I must finish the work fast.” But at the master’s insistence he went and sharpened his crowbar. The next day he planted 40 saplings and got his wages. He was very happy that he got the money he needed.
Many times we attempt to do things without prayer and waste our energy. But if we spend time in prayer, we will become sharp instruments in God’s hands.
