School just reopened and so everything was slack. “Let’s all be talking today,” said the teacher. “Tell me what you did during your vacation.”
Babu jumped up from his seat and shouted, “Teacher, we went to Kodaikanal. I went boat-riding in the lake.”
Vinitha lifted up her hand and when the teacher gave her permission, she spoke up, “Ma’am, my daddy took us all to Chennai and we saw so much — beach, zoo, crocodile farm ...” She went on and on.
“What Mani? Why are you sad and quiet? Tell me about your holidays,” said his teacher. Some of Mani’s friends laughed and teased him, “Get up Mani barber, get up.” But Mani would not get up. He was shy and tongue-tied. One of his friends spoke up.
“Teacher, Mani’s father is a barber. During vacation Mani worked in his father’s shop helping him and learning the trade.”
At this the whole class erupted in laughter making Mani shrink further. The teacher silenced the class and spoke, “What Mani has done is excellent. You people spent your parents’ money. But Mani earned for his parents. No job is menial. You all should learn whatever comes your way. That will be useful for the future. Now, you children give a loud handclap for Mani.”
The handclap brought the roof down. Now Mani lifted up his head and smiled.
Work is dignity!
