Anna kicked stones as she walked behind her friends to school. She kept thinking of her empty pocket. She felt sad that she would once again not be able to drink tender coconut water with her friends.
Anna’s father was a poor mason and earned barely enough to run the house. Anna understood her father’s problem. So she never asked him for money.
Whenever her friends asked her to accompany them to the coconut vendor’s shop, she said, “I don’t like coconut water.”
But the sight of her friends drinking the tender coconut water and relishing the coconut jelly was so very tempting and her mouth watered every time. Anna dealt with this problem by dreaming that she was actually drinking tender coconut water.
One day on her way to school with her friends, she found a small puppy lying by the roadside. He was bleeding profusely. She found that someone had thrown a stone at it. “Oh! Little puppy, someone has hurt you,” she said as she wrapped his leg with her
handkerchief.
She asked her friends to help her carry her bag as she could not manage the pup and the bag together. But her friends just laughed at her and walked off to school.
Anna ran home, juggling the pup, her bag and water bottle with great difficulty. As soon as her mother saw her with the pup she understood what had happened.
“I will take care of this puppy. You run to school or you will be late,” said mummy. Anna kissed her mother and ran back to school. All through the day she thought of the puppy. When she got back home, the puppy was sitting at the door waiting for her.
It wagged its tail and licked her affectionately. Anna played with him till dark as the next day was Sunday.
The next day, she saw the coconut vendor’s son weeping. She asked him what had happened. “Oh! my little black puppy has been missing since yesterday and I cannot live without him,” said the boy and again burst into tears. Anna thought for a while and
asked him to come to her house. Puzzled, the boy followed her. When he saw the puppy he jumped with joy. The puppy wagged his tail and barked in excitement. The boy cried in joy and hugged the pup. Then Anna told him about how she came to keep the puppy.
The boy was very happy and thanked Anna repeatedly. Anna was happy as well as sad; she waved till they both were out of her sight.
Next day, as usual when her friends stopped to drink coconut water, she just stood with them. The boy and his puppy came up to her and offered her a beautiful green coconut and a straw. She hesitated, “But I do not have money,” she said.
The boy laughed and said, “You have given me back my most precious possession. This is only a gesture of thanks and this will continue every day.”
Anna’s heart leapt with joy and she smiled back.
Her friends looked at her and thought, “Good deeds do get rewarded!”
