The Henry Ford car company faced a crisis. Their workshop came to a grinding halt and nobody knew where the fault lay. Many top engineers came and tried but to no avail. The company was losing money every hour. Finally someone suggested Jacob, an
unlettered man with a very sharp brain, who was a local car mechanic. So Jacob was called for. Jacob inspected the whole maze and finally tightened a screw. The whole system sprang back to life. Everyone was relieved until the bill came. Jacob had charged the company $10,000 for his services!
Henry Ford wrote Jacob a thanks letter concluding, “Don’t you think $10,000 is too much to tighten a screw?” Jacob wrote back, “Sir, the charges for tightening the screw is $1. The charges for knowing where the problem lay is $9999.” The bill was promptly paid.
