My work had brought me to Chennai. I managed to squeeze an hour out of my schedule to pay a visit to Mala. She was on her way to the canteen.
“Wow! It’s going to rain today!”
I was pleased to hear the welcome in her voice.
“Great! We need rain,” I grinned.
She took me to the canteen. We talked through a couple of masala dosas.
“Come, let’s go to my room,” she invited.
“What’s that music I hear?”
“Some prayer meeting going on.”
“Why didn’t you go?”
“I don’t think I can get along there.”
“Mala, how can you say that when you are a Christian? Aren’t you a part of the Body of Christ? Jesus teaches about togetherness that we are all members of one body. As it is we Christians are a minority in India. We are only 3% . If we stand divided it is not going to profit us or bless the nation. What we need is harmony. What a cacophony of noise it would be if every instrument in an orchestra played its own tune? God wants a perfect harmony. Every instrument plays its part but the whole must blend and synchronise into a perfect harmony. You must learn to be broad-minded.”
“Talk of peace and harmony! They themselves are like cats and dogs...biting, scratching and clawing.”
“Mala, don’t be so quick to criticise. After all, they are believers. You must fellowship with all the children of God. There will be differences of opinion, I grant. But unity is strength. God is not finished with them yet.”
There were so many things to talk about. We ran out of time. I got into a crowded 109A and finally got home by Mangalore Express...dusty, sweating and very very tired.
