Dear Aunty,
The piggy bank is yours. I’ve lost the bet. I’m utterly miserable here. I’m dying to get home. I can’t stand the grub. I hardly eat anything. I’m sure I have lost weight. The seniors are such beasts. They grab every opportunity to rag us. Last night I slept at 2. I cried myself to sleep.
I can’t study here. My room-mate Aarthi is quite friendly. But her guy makes a nuisance of himself. They go out together. Sometimes they seem to be lost in conversation under the tree outside my window. I think I’ll shift to another room.
To make things worse, I don’t get any privacy when I want to pray. Classes are okay. No personal attention, though. I feel so lost....as if I am alone and drifting in the uncharted sea...I need your prayers. Please write to me immediately.
Melancholy Mala.

Dear Mala,
Greetings in the sweet Name of Jesus.
We returned home last night after a Students’ Camp. I read your letter. Yes, you will feel homesick at first. But you’ll be alright soon. We are praying fervently for you. You will soon learn to stand on your own feet. “Like the eagle that stirs up its nest, and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him” (Deut 32:11,12). God won’t keep you in the nest forever. Like the eaglet, you must learn to fly but the Lord will always keep you under the shadow of His wings.
Of course, you will crave for home-cooked food. And your finicky palate will detest the unsavoury hostel cooking. But that’s all part of the game. Get used to it and don’t skip any meal. That will ruin your health. If I remember right, you are a fastidious eater - you love non-veg, don’t you? But dhals, lentils, vegetables, fruits and milk are also rich in protein and vitamins. Take curd or buttermilk. Don’t live on snacks and chocolates. Try to have a balanced diet. Your body is the temple of the living God. Take good care of it.
They rag you, do they? I wonder if you will resist the temptation to rag your juniors next year! Be tolerant. Grin and bear it. If you can take it with a good sense of humour, you will endear yourself to your seniors. Besides, when they find that you don’t over-react, they will leave you alone.
I don’t advise you to shift to another room. Perhaps you could win your room-mate for Jesus by your thoughtful ways. Wait! Don’t be impulsive. A perfect room-mate will be impossible to find. Remember we have to live in this world, even though we are not of this world.
You need the company of other Christian girls. Join a prayer group. If there isn’t one, why not take the initiative and start one? May the Lord bless all your efforts.
Take your lessons seriously. Make up your mind to study systematically right from the start. Don’t let your lessons pile up. Don’t burn the midnight oil on the day before the exam.
Physical activity will keep you trim and in good health. I would advise you to take part in NCC, games, sports and such extra-curricular activities.
Your friend, Valli, has accepted Jesus. Her orthodox Hindu parents are furious with her. Remember to pray for her. Write to me often. Write the latest news! Which fan club are you in currently?
Love and prayers,
Your Aunty
