Come September and the worry creases deepened on Mala’s brow. The memory of her failure haunted and depressed her.
“I’m no good. I’m sure I’ll fail again. I’ll never make it...Aunty I...”
“Cut it out girl! Stop whining! You could make a hardened pessimist blush!
“Listen to me... Cast your burden on the Lord. Victory is the Lord’s. He shall bring it to pass.
“And don’t keep your Bible aside, just because your exams are near. Continue your daily devotion and be regular in prayer.
“Put your heart and soul into your lessons. ‘Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom,’ says the Preacher in Eccl 9:10. For the present, your studies are your main concern. So give of your best. Student days are the best part of life. They will never come again. Only one life, it will soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last. Think of your student days as a time of preparation for the Lord’s work. So it is worth putting in a lot of effort into your studies.
“Your aim is to become truly ‘educated’- not just to pass an examination. Learn, because you have the curiosity and the desire to know more. Don’t take short-cuts and mug up so-called important answers from cheap bazaar guides. They never help you to learn intelligently. What you don’t understand, your brain will never retain. Be faithful in little things and God will give greater responsibilities.
“Learn attentively, taking in every minute detail. Keep a notebook for jotting down important points. Make a study timetable and allot adequate time for every subject. You must also remember to look after your health. Eat well and take adequate rest. You must get atleast 6-8 hours sleep a day. Do your best and leave the rest.”
She did! And she passed with a first class.
