Beware, Thief!

Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

How true! This thief does not come with a black mask. He may come in the form of a friend or a pastime and plunder our youth of its valuable treasures.

One of the treasures he “steals” is our time. Time waits for no man. Every second that he robs us of, is precious because it never returns. How carelessly we throw away this priceless jewel! How thoughtlessly do we let it slip through our fingers!

He “kills” our witness. The devil has won a great victory if he can undo the witness of a saved person. One who has lost her witness becomes fruitless and has no part in spreading the Kingdom of God. This is the most gruesome of Satan’s murders.

He “destroys” chastity. Sad but true - many are the stories of young girls who have lost their chastity in the hot flush of youth and have spent the rest of their lives drowning in guilt and regret. Every unmarried girl must guard her chastity zealously. This certainly is not a matter to be flippant about. A girl should never allow petting. Petting leads to peril. Virginity once lost is lost forever.

Wear on your soul a neon sign flashing the warning, “Beware of Thief.” If you don’t keep vigil the house will be looted. On the other hand, Jesus came to give us life and to give it abundantly.

Therefore, we must first of all commit our time in His hands and wait upon Him to teach us how to use it fruitfully. Tomorrow never comes. So spend your time usefully today.

Secondly, we must commit our witness into His hands. He will cause its fragrance to spread far and wide. “Thanks be to God who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Cor 2:14-16).

What is a flower without its perfume! It is its fragrance that draws butterflies, bees and innumerable other creatures to feast on its nectar, pollinate it and make it bear fruit. By our fragrant witness we must attract people and bring them to the Lord and feed them on the honey dew of God’s Word. They too will go forth and bear fruit inspired by our example. And the Kingdom of God will grow.

Thirdly, the Lord alone can bless and increase the fruit of youth to a hundredfold. “An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world — how she can please her husband  ” (1 Cor 7:34).

A young woman is a flower in bloom. How right and good it is that a youth should give generously of her sweetness and fragrance to the Lord. The wise Solomon admonished us, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.” God must get your undivided attention and devotion during your youth.
