"Aunty, we had a special meeting in the church and the speaker spoke excellently on reconciliation. He gave some time for us to decide on our knees to settle matters with others. The first thing that came to my mind was my disobedience to parents and quarrels with my sister. I have decided to ask their forgiveness. But another thing: It is three months since I have spoken to one of my classmates. She's a bully. If she comes and talks to me, no problem. But how can I take the first step?"
"Relax girlie. If we remember that someone has something against us, WE must immediately go to that person and make peace. That's what the Bible says. If it is your fault, ask for forgiveness politely. If someone has hurt you, forgive wholeheartedly. Remove all bitterness from your heart."
"I'm not sure if God is prompting me to get right with people or if it is my mind that's playing tricks on me."
"God speaks in many ways. He speaks to you as you read your Bible. He can also speak through preachers, books, magazines, testimonies or your conscience."
Mala leaned back on the sofa and stared at the ceiling, tapping a foot to the cadence of a song that wafted through the window from the neighbour's house.
"Hey, are you talking to God?"
"I was just wondering how to go and say I am sorry. So humihating even to think. I guess I've never done that in the past."
"C'mon man. It's going to be easy. God will give you the strength. You must start your new life with a clean slate. If you wallow in your past, you can never move forward."
She got up and walked and I patted her on the shoulder. She walked ahead, turned round and gave me a flying kiss with a mischievous grin. I knew she would do it. I felt too shy to return the kiss. As I turned around I was laughing within myself with almost teenage delight.
