Who can stomach the agony of betrayal or disloyalty? If all other trials can be compared to scratches and bruises, betrayal is massive injury to the heart and spirit.
In these days when mutual backstabbing is considered as the norm, let your reaction to disloyalty be a first class act that puts normal virtues to shame. We have the examples of David and Jesus to compare and learn. Surprisingly both happened across the mount of Olives (2 Sam 15:30; Lk 22:39).
1. David’s own son Absaloam became disloyal; Jesus’ own disciple, Judas betrayed Jesus.
2. Shimei cursed David and stoned him; Judas gave Jesus the kiss of death.
3. David’s mighty man Abishai, wanted to take the sword and cut off Shimei’s head; Peter drew the sword and cut off Malchus’ ear.
4. David would not allow his men to hurt Shimei; Jesus asked Peter to put back his sword into its sheath and healed the ear.
5. David said God must have told Shimei to curse him; Jesus said those things happened that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.
6. David had armed mighty men with him; Jesus had legions of angles at His disposal. Yet both did not use their power against their enemies.
7. David was betrayed for a kingdom; Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
8. David got back his kingdom. Jesus is highly exalted and is the King of kings. Perhaps the greatest challenge to forgiveness is betrayal. Don’t try to get even with your enemy friend. Lamech’s formula for vengeance was 7 x 70 (Gen 4:24). But Jesus’ formula for forgiveness is 7 x 70. It is a power game where you win by losing! When Jesus spoke about the trial of betrayal His conclusive advice was, “In your patience possess your souls’ (Lk 21:16-19). He not only said it but did it. David who lived before Calvary and Pentecost could do it. Can we not, when the sword of disloyalty pierces through us?
