The ‘F’ Word

How strange it is that Foul Words flow like a stream out of the mouth of even civi- lized people! It is an irksome fact that parents rain foul words on their chil- dren and spouses on one another. Turn the TV on to watch some comedy and relax, and your ears tingle at the vulgar jokes and crude language. What word is not allowed in the family conversation, repeat- edly jumps off the TV with the entire house- hold watching and howling with laughter. School children use language that cannot be tolerated at home. A child gets an abu- sive tongue-lashing from the teacher. Have we lost our conscience? Have we failed to examine our hearts each day? Have we con- sidered coarse language a minor thing? Have we thought we can get away with it on the Great Day of enquiry? Where have we failed? I am sick of the foul word.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my mother who would bring a live coal in tongs to threaten us if we ever uttered a bad word. The Bible says, “You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourself of all such things as these... filthy language from your lips” (Col 3:7,8). May be before coming to Christ you used obscene language. It might have become your habit and kicking the ticking habit may not be all that easy. May be your friends speak profanity and you are tempted to think it is O.K. It is not O.K. You have to learn a new language, a clean language. Paul says we must watch our lan- guage. “Let no corrupt  word proceed out of your mouth” (Eph 4:29) Your con- science will point its finger at the word. “In matters of conscience, the law of ma- jority has no place,” said Gandhiji. So don’t let anyone dictate your conscience. Under- stand that it is possible to get your point across without using bad language.

Saul was a very gentle man with a de- cent language (1 Sam 9,10). But when he gave place to the evil spirit his language turned foul (1 Sam 20:30). The men of Sodom and Gomorrah were filthy (2 Pet 2:7). And we know the language they spoke. That’s akin to Revelation 16:13: “Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet.”

How do you like it? Every foul word you speak is like a frog coming out of your mouth. Wake up and clean up your vocabulary.

We are living in a world of bad manners. You must be an example to others in your language. “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an ex- ample for the believers in speech...” (1 Tim 4:12). Praise and swearing cannot come out of the same mouth just as fresh water and salt water from the same spring (Js 3:10). Language pollution has gone too far. Lack of family role models need not stop you. By training your tongue you can become an example to them.

It is never too late to turn around your language. Try the following —

1. Eschew friends who speak bad language.

2. Each time you feel a pang of guilt, go to God in  confession and make a decision to  speak only clean language. Turn to the higher power for help.

3. Get a friend who can point out your sin of filthy language whenever you violate your decision.

4. Pray for lips anointed with grace (Ps 45:2) and be off foul words for good!

“All spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His lips” (Lk 4:22).
