Reading: Luke 10:25-37
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mt 5:16)
“The servant ran to meet her and said: ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar.’ ‘Drink my Lord,’ she said and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink” (Gen 24:17,18). Rebekah was from a wealthy family. When a wayfarer requested water she could have refused curtly or just walked away ignoring him. This is what is happening today. Ladies are becoming more and more impolite. Overwork could be one reason. But the main reason is that empathy and concern for others are disappearing from the world in general.
A smile, a hello, a little act of kindness go a long way in making the world a happy place. Lot would not allow strangers to stay in the dangerous city square but opened his house for them. Abigail was ready to feed David and his team. Rebekah addressed the servant as ‘Lord.’ That shows how she respected people.
Jesus taught us to love our neighbours through the Parable of the Good Samaritan. He went out of the way to help a man in need. Nowadays people are more interested to click their mobiles at an accident spot than rush to the aid of the injured. They hesitate to soil their hands, to sacrifice their time and answer the police.
Develop a helping nature. If we see anyone in need of a cup of cold water or a pen to fill up a form or a seat in the bus or train or a blanket for the cold, let us do it. Hold the door open for the next person. There are opportunities everywhere to touch the hearts of people by the courtesy you show them. Many autodrivers and shopkeepers will be happily surprised when you say: “Thank you.” Unless we plan to do it, we will never do it. So let us start within the family first. Thank your children and husband and do not hesitate to spell out a genuine “sorry.” Look for ways to be courteous in words and deeds. Avoid rude behaviour like walking off without answering, shouting or banging the door. A courteous person is pleasant to live with. Let your courtesy flow over to your neighbours, coworkers in your workspot and strangers on the street. Let people know that the world is still a good place to live in because of Christians. Are we not the salt of the world?
Rebekah was richly rewarded for her small act of courtesy. So shall we be!
