“She who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to people” (1 Cor 14:4)
We read of many prophetesses in the Bible like Miriam (Ex 15:20), Lemuel’s mother (Prov 31:1), Huldah (2 Ki 22:14), Isaiah’s wife (Isa 8:3), Deborah (Judg 4:4), and Anna (Lk 2:36). There were also false prophetesses like Noadiah (Neh 6:14) and Jezebel (Rev 2:20). Nowadays there is a resurgence of the gift of prophecy. The number of false prophets is also multiplying and many are succumbing to their charms. In the last days “many false prophets will appear and deceive many people,” said Jesus (Mt 24:11).
In a way, all who are filled with the Spirit of God are prophets (Acts 2:17). We need to be extremely careful when we handle the Word of God. When you say, “God says,” you need to be sure that your hearers are edified, exhorted and comforted. The best way to be authentic that you are telling people only what God told you is to speak from the Word of God and never contradict it.
A group of prophets, including Noadiah, were hired to prophesy to Nehemiah to frighten him. It was their own agenda and words not God’s (Neh 6:10-14). Compare this with the words of other prophetesses which brought joy and encouragement to all who heard them.
Even when we preach the gospel or give a message or even counsel an individual the Spirit of God may anoint us to speak prophetically. We need to take care to keep ourselves within the boundary of God’s Word. When we give our own suggestions or plans, we can always say, “I think or I feel this will be the right thing to do.” We can also direct people to the Word of God and say, “This is what the Bible says.” That way we are safe and our congregation in safe.
It goes without saying that as Spirit-filled women we need to be rooted and grounded in the Word of God. Our motive must be pure and we must do our best to present ourselves to God as approved ones, workers who do not need to be ashamed and who correctly handle the Word of Truth (2 Tim 2:15).
Huldah’s words brought great comfort to King Josiah. May God use us to strengthen, encourage and comfort our sisters through the Word of God with a prophetic spirit!
