The day dawned as usual for Mrs. Enoch. Little did she realize that she’d become a widow that day. Her husband had gone missing. It became the talk of the town. Finally, after a few days of search for the body, they concluded, God must have taken him away, since he always walked with God (Gen 5:18-27).
Mrs. Enoch was distraught. How could he do that to her? As she thought about her husband, though there was no funeral, she felt comforted. She knew he was a godly man and after all he was with God. Why didn’t God take her too? Was she not godly? But God wanted her to be on earth to nurture the children.
Her children ranged from newborn to 300 years of age (around 35 years today). Many were unmarried. What would she do? Methuselah their son was married and Lamech was born. Enoch saw Lamech. So, Mrs. Enoch was a young grandmother when she was widowed.
They went to the scribe who recorded births and deaths. “What shall I write?” he probably thought. “Ok, I’ll put it down as: Enoch walked faithfully with God, then he was no more, because God took him away.”
She struggled to bring up the children single-handedly and got them settled in life. She was thankful for the support of her extended family. God did not let down this prophet’s wife. She saw a godly generation and became the foremother of Jesus (Lk 3:37). She brought up her children in godly ways in spite of being surrounded by wickedness. She told her confused children that God was their father. She comforted her relatives that God would care for her more than a husband.
Dear lonely wife, God says, “Do not be afraid ... do not fear ... For your Maker is your husband ... Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken ... says the Lord who has compassion on you ... All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace ... no weapon forged against you will prevail” (Isa 54).
Face life bravely, one day at a time. God Almighty is with you. You have to have hope. It’s the only way to go on.
