Is there a deep dissatisfaction at the depth of your being about your spiritual grades? May be you are not good enough to go to heaven or receive the Holy Spirit or even walk with God? It is a good sign but it need not agitate you. Jesus wanted us to be as perfect as our heavenly Father. Is that possible?
God does not desire in us perfection as much as He desires to see a longing for perfection in us. Sarah was not perfect but she was good enough for God to accomplish His purposes through her (Heb 11:11).
May be you are trying your level best, but meet with failure after failure. Take heart. You are growing. Holiness is not an instant miracle. It is a growth process that continues all our life (2 Cor 3:18). We are not where we should be but we are not where we were. We are moving towards where we ought to be.
Sarah gave Hagar to her husband following the custom of the people surrounding her. By this faithless act she deviated her family from the path God had chartered. Because of that she suffered periodic headaches all her life. But she had learnt her lesson. She grew in faith and accomplished God’s purposes. “By faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise” (Heb 11:11). “And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore” (vv11,12).
Note the “And so.” It was when Sarah was able to believe, that through Abraham came numerous descendants. There was a time when she thought: “God promised. But nothing is happening. So let me do something about it.” She even laughed at the thought of bearing a child at 90 years of age (Gen 18:12). But within a short time she grew in faith.
Keep praying, “Lord, I believe, please help my unbelief,” and keep walking ahead in your Christian life, learning your lessons all the way, from your failures (Mk 9:24). You will arrive there spic ‘n’ span.
