Sitting on the husband’s head
Reading: Proverbs 31:10-31
“A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown”
(Prov 12:4)
“A wife of noble character who can find?” asks Lemuel’smother (Prov 31:10). The question suggests that such women are very rare and must be sought out. Her worth is far more than rubies.
Looks like her husband did nothing at home. She was not complaining about her husband who was an elder in the city and had no time for home assignments. The entire burden of the household came upon her. Rather than grumbling, fighting and making life miserable for everybody, she decided to rise up to the occasion. She maximized her day by getting up early, going to bed late and substituting enjoyable work for TV.
Noble means to be lofty and exalted in character, showing greatness and magnanimity. I suppose she developed these qualities as a young girl so much so the demands of a marriage did not break her down. She saw it as an opportunity to develop herself. Nobody wiped her tears or patted her on her back. She went on and on and on pouring herself out for her family (which many count as a worthless job) without expecting anything in return.
But a time came when the children who complained that she was a hard mother grew up and called her blessed. The husband who hardly ever appreciated her cooking woke up to the fact that he had a wife of noble character. It took days and months and years before he gave her the certificate that she was more noble than all the noble women.
The central issue here is not hard work as we may think by breezing through the chapter, but fear of God leading to character (v30). Whenever she felt like complaining or running away from it all, these were the strings that held her back. It is the fear of God that kept her going against all odds. This is what made her do good to her husband whenever she felt like killing him. This is what kept her going when she felt like committing suicide.
Dear wife, fear God and keep going. The climate will change. Praise does not flow out of people’s mouth all that easily. So don’t give up. Keep doing good all the days of your life! First you become the husband’s crown; then you receive the crown of glory!
