“The end of a thing is better than its beginning” (Eccl 7:8)
I visualize my funeral service. My daughter speaks about me. She says I was a loving mother to her and she is what she is today because of me. I sacrificed for her, supported her and gave her a happy home. My granddaughter weeps saying, “I’m gonna miss my Amamma. I used to run home from school looking forward for her embrace.” Next my husband stands up and says I was faithful to him and cared for him. A Church member is the next speaker. She says, “Aunty was always after non-Christians, trying to bring them to Christ.” A staff of the Blessing Youth Mission laments, “Aunty never got angry with anyone. She was trustworthy.” I am buried with the epitaph: “Here lies an honest lady.”
Well, this is just my imagination. This is what I want at my funeral. So what do I do? I start living my life towards that goal. If you do not have a goal you will not reach it. If you have wrong goals you will be disappointed in the end. Imagine your epitaph written as, ‘Here lies the famous Mrs. X, who gathered a lot of name and fame, but had to leave them all when she went up.’
What is deeply important to you? Have it in mind every day. If not, you labour the whole day moving in the wrong direction away from your goal. One man asked another, on the funeral of their friend: “How much did he leave?” The answer he got was; “He left it all.” So be clear in your mind in the beginning, what you want to be in the end.
Write down your aims and desires —
I want to win as many souls as possible, keep my home a happy place for my husband and children, not of criticism and fights; make my house a place of love and understanding, not selfishness. Follow the rule of the Bible in every aspect of life. Never give up on life, be a good cook, overcome bad habits, be a happy and smiling person.
You can make your own statement. In the words of Stephen R. Convey, “Begin with the end in mind.” Jesus did exactly that. “I come to do Your will, O God,” He told His Father. He died with the words: “It is finished!”
