Stand in the Gap!

Reading: Joel 2:15-18

“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall

and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land

so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one” (Ezek 22:30)

Let’s continue to examine our prayer life —

  1. Do you pray in the Spirit? For example, praying in tongues helps you bypass your mind or intellect and blend your spirit with God’s. How faithfully are you in using this enablement in private prayer if God has given it to you? Do you lean on the Spirit’s help in intercession and allow Him to intercede through you?
  2. Do you pray when you meet a spiritual friend? Do you fellowship in prayer? There are things you two can agree in prayer to receive an answer from God. Do you make use of such opportunities?
  3. Do you claim God’s promises in prayer? Keep the Bible open before you when you pray. Develop the habit of reading out Scriptures in prayer or putting your finger on a verse and praying over it.
  4. Are you interested in high-flown language while praying or do you just want to talk like a child to a father? Try to use simple but reverential language. Be simple and frank like Hannah (1 Sam 1). Study the Bible prayers.
  5. Do you use such words and phrases as ‘Oh Lord, Praise the Lord, glory glory glory, Hallelujah, etc., repeatedly to fill up gaps? That means you have not yet felt the presence of God. You need not be in a hurry to be continuous. Silent gaps are okay. In fact God may use them to impress upon our mind His answers. Talk slow. Think in between. Ask God questions. Think of related Scriptures that may supply you the answers.
  6. Do you plan your words before your turn, in a group, instead of following the one who is praying at the moment? Do you desire to excel others in prayer? Are you conscious of what others might think of your prayer? Do you hesitate to finish your prayer in one or two sentences and try to stretch it to make it longer to give a better impression to others?
  7. Do you use an opportunity to pray for a point in group prayer? Are you inactive and dumb? That may mean you think too much about yourself, too worried about your performance, too selfconscious. This attitude may make you pray too soft or too loud, and single you out from all the rest.
