Empty purse
Reading: Luke 12:16-21
“Give and it will be given to you” (Lk 6:38)
As Jesus looked up, He saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on” (Lk 21:1-4).
Here I see not her giving, but her tremendous faith. If she had those two mites in her purse, she would count on it for her lunch. But she made herself poorer so she could completely fall back on God. How many of us dare do it? How many of us would exercise this dare-devil faith? Do you want another example? Here is a woman with no breadwinner at home, a widow in Zarephath. God wanted her to empty the flour and oil in faith. She believed the prophet and emptied the vessels and found she could not empty them. Though the whole country suffered in the drought, she and her family ate and put on weight during the famine (1 Ki 17).
While traveling through the wilderness, an appeal was sent for brass, to make the laver. Women serving at the Tabernacle brought something that was very precious to them — their hand mirror of polished brass. They knew if they gave it away they could not get another one in the wilderness. Yet they chose to give. They saw their precious mirror turn into the bronze basin. They served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Was that not enough sacrifice? No, they wanted to give more to the King of kings and show Him their gratitude (Ex 38:8).
Let us open up our godrejes, suitcases, safes and handbags and give whatever we can. We have too much. Let us not live for pleasure and be dead even while we live (1 Tim 5:6). Jesus said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God,” in the context of giving (Lk 18:27). Don’t plan to put more Fixed Deposits or buy gold or build one more house. More properties mean more worries, more ill health and fight among the children. You already have enough. Don’t save too much for the children; let them stand on their own feet. Be rich towards God (Lk 12:16-21).
When you open your eyes in Heaven you should not worry, “I wish I had given more,” but be happy and rejoice, “I'm glad I emptied my purse. I suffered, but now I am compensated.”
