Women, Pray for Women!
Reading: Acts 12:2-17
“You walls of Daughter Zion, let your tears flow like a river day
and night; give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest” (Lam 2:18)
Prayer has power. So let us pray for the following —
When a family goes through trouble, the temple poojari advises them to dedicate their girl child as a temple prostitute. Pray for this evil Devadasi system to be rooted out of our country. Thousands of girls are dedicated as temple prostitutes. They are bought by flesh traders and sold to city brothels.
Female circumcision is the cruel practice of cutting off part of the genitalia of a girl child in the belief that she will lose her sexual pleasure and therefore not go astray. This practice is prevalent in Africa, many parts of India and many other countries and even advanced countries among the migrants.
Many girls remain unmarried as they cannot afford dowry. Especially converts to Christianity face a hard time. Forced marriage to someone they don’t like or not allowed to marry the one they love is another problem. Rape and murder is a threat even to babies and senior citizens. Murder for gain is faced by women because they wear jewels and often remain at home. Remember senior citizens forced to live alone. Barrenness is looked upon as the woman’s fault and many such wives are put away by their husbands.
Innumerable women die during pregnancy and delivery because many do not enjoy good food and medical care. Pray for doctors to boldly move into villages and tribal areas where there’s no doctor.
Torture by husband and in-laws and even murder are every day events in our country. Even girls who bring in a good dowry face harassment in a joint family which may culminate in suicide. Alcoholic and immoral husbands are the worst probably.
Pray for the practice of Sati that it may not raise its ugly head again. Many atrocities against women never come to light and are covered up. Pray for stricter laws.
Remember senior citizens facing poverty, who commit suicide not to be a burden to their children; human sacrifice, honour killing, divorced and single mothers, and widows forced to remain as widows.
Some girl, some woman, is weeping somewhere. Pray!
