Samuels & Timothys
Reading: 1 Samuel 1:21-28
“I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life”
(1 Sam 1:11)
Even before there was any hope of having a child, Hannah decided to bring him up for God. As for Timothy, even though his father was a Greek, his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois made it a point to make known to him the Holy Scriptures from infancy that ultimately blessed him with the gift of salvation (2 Tim 1:5; 3:15). As for Samuel, though he grew up in the company of an old man and his wicked sons, his mother’s prayer and faith saved him. How we wish our children grow up to be Samuels and Timothys!
Even before your child is born, commit it to the Lord in prayer. Bringing up a child for God is no easy task and should be taken up with all seriousness. I believe, teaching the Scriptures from infancy is the first thing to do. The child should grow up to love God’s Word. As the baby grows up, soon discipline becomes a necessity. Be bold to discipline and never fear to handle the rod when necessary. “Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves the children is careful to discipline them” (Prov 13:24; 19:18; 23:13,14). But be gentle and do it out of love and not anger. If you plan and discipline you’ll be in control of yourself.
The father, mother and if possible the grandparents too must dedicate themselves for the multidimensional growth of the child. A child getting saved by a miracle is not the rule; rather they must be brought up in the training and instruction of the Lord without provoking them to anger. Fathers must take the lead in this and in conducting family prayer regularly (Eph 6:4). Where the father fails the mother must do it. Both must be generous in their instruction and teaching (Prov 1:8).
These are evil days. So be gentle and loving to the children. Try to understand their inner feelings. The home must be a haven of love and happiness for the children and not a place of terror.
The power of prayer for children cannot be underestimated. Keep pleading for them before the throne of grace. Never give up on them. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you and your family will be saved (Acts 16:31).
