Dr David Livingstone

Livingstone was born in a poor Scottish family. Since there was no free education those days, at the age of 10 he joined a mill and worked for 14 hours a day. In his spare time he studied and at the age of 27 got his medical degree.

Those who spread Christ’s message are called missionaries. They educate people and give them medical aid. Dr. David Livingstone wanted to become a missionary. At that time Dr. Moffat was a missionary in South Africa. He invited Livingstone to Africa.  At that time the whites in Africa treated the blacks as slaves. When Livingstone went there he started fighting against slave- trade. He wanted to serve the blacks all his life. So he learned the various African dialects. In 1844 he married Dr. Moffat’s   daughter Mary.

In 1849 he crossed the Kalahari Desert and travelled along dangerous routes. There were no roads. There were dangerous forests, rivers and lakes full of crocodiles and swamps. After two years he reached the Zambasi River and Victoria Falls. He was the  first missionary to reach Central Africa. He wrote a detailed diary of his journeys, the plants and insects he came across. He also drew a map of the regions discovered. Wherever he went, he saw the sufferings of the Africans and treated their illnesses. He wanted to raise the standard of their living.

In 1865 his wife died. The African climate and journeys affected David’s health. But he never gave up helping the poor. The people loved him. He died in 1873. News reached England after about a year. The African people preserved his body and sent it to  England and he was buried in West Minster Abbey.

He paved the way for many missionaries to go to Africa. Africa is a transformed country today because of him. Let us dedicate our lives for the poor and downtrodden and follow Dr. David Livingstone’s footsteps.
